Sinusitis and its Different Categorizations of Infection

 Sinus infection is commonly termed as sinusitis. It is caused mainly by inflammation of sinus cavities in nasal passage due to sources, like bacteria, virus, fungus or allergens. Sinusitis is treated according to location and type of paranasal sinus infection. Sinus infection is caused by swelling of sinus cavity due to infection caused in mucus. Mainly, people with low immunity are more prone to sinusitis and get affected from it.

In most cases, nasal membranes become inflamed and cause irritation in nasal cavity. Nasal lining and mucus inside it collects airborne particles and gets infected. This infection causes swelling, which prohibits air and mucus flow from the cavity. When membranes become inflamed or swollen, there is more mucus secreted and it can’t even drain out easily. 

This makes stagnation of mucus inside nasal cavity and it causes congestion. In this condition, other factors, like smoke, weather variations and other foreign bodies irritate and injure cilia. Sinusitis can get your body in trouble and makes it dull.

Kinds of paranasal sinus cavities

 there are four types of paranasal sinuses in human  ody,including Frontal Sinus (behind forehead), Ethmoid sinus (behind eyes), Maxillary sinus (within cheeks) and Sphenoid sinus (deep behind Ethmoid sinus).

Doctors make diagnosis to know the location of sinusitis and then give relevant treatment for sinusitis. Some people have in-born structural problems related to sinuses and get deviation in nasal mucus for proper drainage. In such cases, patients usually undergo a surgical procedure to get rid of deviation to allow smooth drainage of mucus.

Sinusitis Categorization

Sinusitis can be categorized into two main categories. These are the basis for doctors to recommend medication to patients. The first category is based on time spam of rooted infection and second category is based on inflammation type.

Time Span Based Classification

Time spam related sinus infection can be further classified as acute, sub-acute and chronic. Acute sinus is just similar to common cold and remains for 2-4 weeks duration. Patients get greenish yellow nasal discharge, cough, headache, swelling and pressure in facial area. Due to nasal blockage, people feel a loss of smelling sense.

Sub –acute infection goes over 4 weeks, but gets cured up to 8 weeks’ time. Sub-acute and chronic sinusitis types are always confused and are resultants of incomplete treatment of acute infection. Chronic sinus infection produces fever and the problem lasts for over three months. It includes nasal congestion, sore throat, low grade fever, runny nose, jaw pain, body aches and other problems. It makes difficultly for a person to sleep comfortably.

Inflammation Type Classification

This is the second classification mode, based on inflammation and infection kind. There can be various causes of sinusitis, including Infectious sources (virus, bacteria, fungus) or non-infectious sources (allergens).

In most of the cases, sinusitis is diagnosed and treated on the basis of physical examination and clinical or laboratory findings. In major cases, CT Scans, MRI or X-rays of patients are taken to get clarity about infection spread.
