As the name suggests, Maxillary sinusitis is caused by infection caused in maxillary sinus cavity. There are four pairs of pasanasal sinuses and maxillary sinus is located below eyes and on either sides of nose. The reason of maxillary sinusitis may be infection or allergens caused in maxillary sinus. Maxillary sinusitis is named so due to hollow bone below eyes and inside cheek bone, called maxilla.
Maxillary sinusitis symptoms
Maxillary sinusitis causes severe pain in upper jaw and acute pain in cheeks. It might also result in swelling of face muscles.The pain becomes higher on bending forward or backward. Dental pain caused by maxillary sinusitis is often misunderstood as jaw pain or toothache. There are always secondary symptoms associated with maxillary sinusitis, like fever, fatigue, yellowish green nasal discharge, headache and facial swelling.
The difference between dental pain and maxillary sinusitis pain is that dental pain can be felt anywhere in teeth area and sinusitis pain occurs in upper jaw only. Dentist can examine the area and let you know whether the pain is related to dental issue or sinusitis.
Major Causes of maxillary sinusitis
One of the main causes of maxillary sinusitis is excess marginal periodontitis or periapical abscess. In some cases, retention cysts can be the reason of problem. There are some tumors related to maxillary sinus cavity and they can be one of the major causes of maxillary sinusitis. Infection might also be caused due to poor oral cleanliness. Teeth and gums get accumulation of bacteria with ignorance of mouth hygiene. Bacteria spread into sinus cavity and causes jaw pain.Maxillary Sinusitis Diagnosis
Maxillary sinusitis can be diagnosed by physical examination of infected area. In some cases, use of radiography, X-Rays, CT Scan and MRI scans can be made to evaluate sinusitis.Maxillary sinuses can be viewed though these scans and doctors can give medications based on tests and scanning reports. Surgery is the last option chosen by doctors and is mainly recommended for some physical abnormality in maxillary sinus.
Maxillary sinusitis treatments
Acute maxillary sinusitis can be treated by anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics or nasal decongestants. Surgical procedures can be required in some chronic cases.There are some common home remedies available for curing acute cases. Nasal irrigation is the way of removing mucus with the help of warm saline water and it can cure sinus infection. Doctors also recommend steam in-take to get rid of congestion.
